what is strike pay?

You will not be paid by the university for the days you go on strike. However, you are guaranteed £50 from UNISON for each day you go on strike, with a potential extra supplement from our own branch industrial action fund for those most in need.

How much is deducted from my payslip?

The amount deducted from your payslip will be based on your annual salary divided by 365.

The University policy says:

If you take part in a strike you are not entitled to your contractual pay for the dates you participate.

The University will withhold 100% of pay, at a daily rate of 1/365th of annual salary.

For example, if you are on spine point 22 (£31,236) then £85 will be deducted for each day you were on strike.

This deduction happens before tax, so the actual impact on your take home pay is less. For example, on spine point 22, if your tax rate is 25%, then your take home pay would be reduced by £63.75.

So if you’re in the middle of Grade G on £33, 951 and you pay 25% tax, you will lose about £69 from your payslip for each day of strike. With the £50 payment from UNISON that means you are losing out on about £19 per strike day.

For the February strike dates, we expect this money to be deducted from March payslips, but we cannot guarantee this.

How much will I get in strike pay?

You are guaranteed £50 from UNISON for each day you go on strike.

For people that need it, this £50 can be supplemented up to an additional £20 from our own branch funds, on a “no questions asked” basis in response to sincere requests from members. Please be aware that our branch hardship funds for industrial action are limited and that this is a legitimate hardship fund.

What is the latest day I can join UNISON and still be eligible for strike pay?

On the day of the strike! Join UNISON.

Can non-members still get strike pay?

No. But they can join the union on the same day as the strike, and be eligible for strike pay!
