how to show solidarity with trans colleagues and students

Our branch will always support and fight for trans colleagues and students.

If you are a trans member of staff, we urge you to engage with UNISON’s Change The Law campaign. They want to hear from you: Opposing the EHRC guidance – UNISON needs your voice – UNISON National

LGBT+ officer Hafren has put together a further checklist of ways you can show your solidarity:

  • Write to your MP to support 240 Early Day Motion to withdraw the Guidance/Code (Email your MP to reject the Code of Practice and support EDM 240)
  • Write to your MP about joining Trans Solidarity Alliance’s 25 June Mass Lobby Day / see if you can attend yourself (https://www.transsolidarityalliance.com/mass-lobby-2026)
  • Be sure to ask whether any Estates planning your team/division/department is presented with are building gender neutral facilities
  • Contact relevant building staff about ensuring there are plans for more gender neutral facilities
  • Be sure to have MazeMap clearly up to date, and share with trans students and staff (University map | Maps and travel information | University of Bristol
  • Consider printing a QR code to MazeMap and highlight how it has info on gender neutral facilities
  • Consider displaying a trans pride flag visibly in your office/facility
  • Don’t be scared to share your pronouns at any meeting you attend, as well as ask colleagues/students – so that when trans people disclose, it’s normal for everyone to disclose

We are currently drafting a template response staff can send to University senior management following discussion of the EHRC guidance in the All Staff Assembly on Tuesday 2nd June. This page will be updated with the meeting recording and template response as soon as we have them.
