What is a Steward?
Stewards support and guide members through difficult HR processes (like grievances, or help through a restructure), and are present during meetings for administrative and emotional support.
They receive full training from central Unison, and join the supportive community of stewards in our branch.

Feeling inspired? Here’s what one of our recently trained members shared about becoming a steward:
“I really wanted to be a steward because it’s one of the most immediate and concrete ways that I can support my fellow Unison members. With the HE sector looking more and more uncertain, and with recent restructures at UoB, I feel stewards are really needed now. I found the knowledge I gained in the stewarding course empowering – being a steward is not about taking ownership of your comrades’ issues, it’s about supporting them to advocate for themselves and find their own way to resolve problems”.
It’s recommended to do the stewarding course in-person ideally, but if you’re unable to attend in person they also run online.
There are upcoming courses running in September/October (online) and in November/December (in person at the Bristol Regional Office).
You should be allowed time off work to attend.
