Message from Your Environmental Officer – Year of Green Activity 🌱

2026 is UNISON’s Year of Green Activity – Our Environmental Officer Lucie ROse has more:

Good tidings comrades!

What with all the business around securing a strike over our pitiful pay offer (huzzah!), I haven’t had much chance to focus on that which really gets my fires burning (from sustainable sources, obviously), Green issues! 2026 is Unison’s ‘Year of Green Activity’ and I will be attending a nationwide kick-off event on Tuesday the 13th of January, following which I will let everyone know of all the exciting events Unison have planned for the coming year. I also wanted to let you know about all the great resources available within the University itself as there are some great initiatives taking place already, just waiting for you to get involved!

A Green Day Out: University of Bristol Botanic Garden

Every day in Winter (Monday to Friday) is a DAISY day (Donate As It Suits You) so you can visit for just £1! It’s a lovely spot to take a little walk around, even on a cold winter’s day. Once the garden starts it’s spring and summer opening times, they operate one DAISY day per week.

Solving Environmental Challenges, right here in Bristol! Cabot Institute for the Environment

Our very own Cabot Institute partners with academics, students, as well as local and international communities, governments and individuals, from all over the world. They also run a great programme of events over the year, bringing world class level people together to talk about the environmental challenges we face as a planet and how we might start to overcome these. They also facilitate the Sustainable Futures – Online Course available at Future Learn where you can find out how you can help to overcome sustainability challenges whilst maintaining your personal wellbeing.

And on the subject of training…

There is a good learning module on Sustainability available in Develop, which is a really good starting point for anyone that wants to try to implement more sustainable ways of working in their every day roles at the University and indeed at home too.

You might also want to join the Viva Engage group ‘Be the Change’ for tips and links to all sorts of sustainable ideas that are University adjacent!

As always if you have any questions or suggestions for me on things you would like to see around the University to make it a greener, happier place, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
