You will have received a pay ballot in the post the week starting 9th September. Please make sure you vote, and we recommend you vote yes for strike action. Every year we collectively ballot on pay, which is not agreed until the unions and employer come to an agreement. Only members have a say on pay, so if you have colleagues who are interested, ask them to join today (http://join.unison.org.uk/).  

Last year the union recommended that members vote yes for strike action in the face of another pay cut in real terms, and 62% voted for strike action. But due to the Governments strict Trade union laws, we didn’t reach the 50% turnout required to qualify for action. This left Bristol Uni staff with 0.5% real terms pay cut and the senior management team who negotiate separately (average salary £181k, now £190.5k) making 2.75% real terms pay rise. 

This year nationally UNISON have again recommended that we vote yes for strike action, because again we have been offered a pay cut. This has happened every year for 10 years.  We understand that the HE sector is threatened with funding cuts by the Conservative government. But our members are already affected, every day, and it hasn’t stopped senior management negotiating decent pay rises each year. We, the workers, are the ones who keep our university running, and we do a fantastic job.
